Leona Valley is the location for the best cherries and wine in California. Leona Valley is a long, narrow valley in the northeastern corner of Los Angeles County. The valley is about a mile wide and 25 miles (40 km) in length. Leona Valley's post-colonial history can be best described as land abundant with cattle ranches. Miguel Leonis, for whom the Valley was named, was a Basque sheep herder. He married the daughter of Urbano, an Indian who owned the 1100 acre Rancho El Escorpion near the present town of Calabasas. Soon Leonis owned the ranch and was grazing his sheep and cattle from Calabasas up through Leona Valley where he gained vast holdings. He was killed in 1900 when his team of horses were frightened in San Francisquito Canyon. In the 1870's and 1880's permanent settlers began to arrive. During the 1880's, the ranches were broken up into smaller homesteads by farmers from Germany, France and the state of Nebraska. The Ritter family started one of the first wineries in this country in Leona Valley which was later shut down by the U.S. Prohibition period in the early 20th century.
